Bolton: US Kosovo Recognition a Serious Mistake

John Bolton, former US Undersecretary of State and Ambassador to the United Nations, told Russian news agency Interfax on Thursday that the US recognition of severed Kosovo province was a serious mistake, leading to an escalation of tensions, instead of calming down the situation in the Balkans.

“American public has no specific stand regarding Kosovo status. This was done by the US State Department, while others paid no attention”, Bolton said in response to the question why have United States supported severing of the southern Serbian province, adding that “support to the independence of Kosovo is an atavism that might have made sense 15 years ago, but makes no sense today.”

Yeah, There’s a “Consensus” Alright — Nobody Knows Where Kosovo is

To the journalist’s remark that, in contrast to Europe, no one talks about this issue in US and that he was told in State Department that “there is a consensus in American public” about recognizing unilateral declaration of independence by the Pristina separatists, Bolton noted that diaspora Serbs who are living in States are trying to draw public attention to this issue, and that the so-called “consensus boils down to the fact that nobody knows where Kosovo is”.

“This is a clear example of the State Department policy from the beginning to the end”, American diplomat said.

He explained that the US policy toward Serbia was on an automatic pilot since the time Slobodan Milosevic had been in power, when the US supported everyone who was against him, but the situation had significantly changed when a democratic government came to power in Belgrade.

Because of Kosovo province problem, the democratic forces in Serbia are under a great pressure and the unnecessary risk of an escalation of violence in the region is growing, Bolton said.

“Serbs in Bosnia will say: If Kosovo can break off from Serbia, why can’t we break off from Bosnia, and the democrats will say: What is going on here — we are striving towards Europe, we are defending the democratic values and this is the kind of reward we get in return!”, said Bolton, a member of the American Enterprise Institute, a Republican Party think-tank.
